Paul Pickering

Paul has been in the Piano trade for 18 years and in that time has gained a vast amount of experience starting his training at the London Guildhall University where he studied for two years in Musical Instrument Technology specialising in piano. From there he went on to study with one of Manchester's top piano technicians where his training took place in places such as The Bridgewater Hall, Chethams School of Music, BBC Manchester, The Royal Northern College of Music, The Lowry and was also given the opportunity to work for a month at what was then Steinway's Park Royal Piano Rebuild Centre. From there Paul became one of four piano tuners at the Royal Northern College of Music where he was resident tuner for ten years. By the time he left, Paul was the head technician looking after a piano fleet of 140 pianos which consisted of all Steinway and Yamaha stock.

Paul is now completely freelance and enjoys working in concert venues, domestic environments and quality institutions all over the north west of England (one of which is one of Englands few all Steinway schools). He also enjoys tuning for cruise liners where he has been resident tuner on board some of P&O's ships for the duration of the cruises. He has also travelled to places such as Brussels and as far away as New Zealand to work.

Concert tuning has been a big part of Paul's work. He has tuned for some of the worlds top artists such as; Alfred Brendel, Paul Lewis, Imogen Cooper, Stephen Hough, Nikolai Demidenko, Dmitei Alexeev, Ludovico Einaudi, Jamie Cullum, Julian Joseph, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Herbie Hancock and this is just to name a few.

Rachel Pickering

Rachel grew up in a house filled with music, her parents keen singers in the local dramatic society. Keen to start lessons on the family piano she begged her parents for lessons at the age of four. This interest continued and over the years all ABRSM grades were obtained. Whilst working at the local music shop Rachel saw the piano tuner visit and was keen to investigate her options for learning this skill. Rachel was trained by John-Paul Williams, learning to tune and repair pianos and graduated in 2006 with a first class honours in her Batchelor of Science Degree. Music Technology (Musical Instruments) also covering Acoustics .  Out of University, Rachel began working in a music shop, repairing used pianos and tuning for some famous names and big concerts whilst there - Stevie Wonder and Art Garfunkel to name a couple. Rachel and Paul met in 2008 through a mutual friend and joined forces to form Pickerings Piano Tuning & Service in 2010.  And now, ten years on Pickerings Piano House is the latest chapter!
